Overview

SummaryLens is a Chrome extension that summarizes discussion threads (Reddit, YouTube, Hacker News) using Chrome's built-in on-device AI (Gemini Nano). It is designed to be privacy-friendly by default.

No data collection

SummaryLens does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data. There are no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no tracking scripts, and no cookies. The extension never sends your data anywhere.

Where your data stays

• All AI processing happens on your device. Summaries are generated locally by Chrome's built-in Gemini Nano model. No text is sent to any external service.
• Thread data is read from the page you are viewing (comment text, titles, vote counts) and is used only to produce a summary on your machine.
• Your summaries are cached locally in Chrome's extension storage (on your device) so previously summarized threads load instantly. This cache is cleared when you remove the extension.

Permissions explained

• storage — saves your summary cache and session state locally on your device.
• sidePanel — shows the summary in Chrome's side panel.
• scripting — reads thread content from the pages you visit (Reddit, YouTube, Hacker News only).
• clipboardWrite — lets you copy the summary (only when you click a copy button). Markdown export is generated locally as a downloaded file.
• Host permissions are limited to the three supported sites: reddit.com, youtube.com and news.ycombinator.com. The extension never runs on any other website.

Third parties

The extension includes a "Buy me a coffee" link that opens buymeacoffee.com in a new tab only when you click it. This is a user-initiated action and is subject to that site's own privacy policy.

Data you can control

• Clear the local cache: uninstall or remove the extension, or use the refresh function in the panel.
• Stop the extension entirely: remove it from chrome://extensions. All locally stored data is deleted.
